The Lighthouse (2019):
The Lighthouse follows two lighthouse keepers descending into madness whilst having to do their job in complete isolation on a mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Broken down to its telling core, it retells an ancient Greek myth with more contemporary tools. It is a tale of confinement, distrust, and mania. Robert Eggers‘ mixes all this with some of his arthouse fantasy horror magic and creates one of the most stirring movies in a long time – weird, dazzling, and versatile. Besides the intriguing – because hard-to-decipher – symbolism carried via thrilling performances by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. The movie’s art style and photography are also impeccable. Almost every frame looks like old photographs or grim postcards from New England.
